Do I need a different car insurance policy as a driving instructor?

Driving instructor insurance is a legal requirement for all Approved Driving Instructors (ADI) and Potential Driving Instructors (PDI) in the UK.

As an ADI or PDI you will need a different kind of car insurance that provides business use cover for: -

Mandatory by Law

  • Any driver (including learners) - this is essential and allows you to teach any licensed driver on the road irrespective of previous driving experience. This also covers the examiner when you lend your tuition vehicle to your pupil's for their driving test.
  • Hire and Reward - because you will accept remuneration from your pupils for giving lessons

Additionally, ADI / PDI / schools need to consider: -

  • Replacement Dual-Control Car cover - learner drivers are in a high risk category. If they have an accident and damage is caused and your car needs to go into the garage for repairs, just so you can continue working and provide driving lessons, you will need a replacement dual-controlled tuition car.
  • Negligent Tuition Cover - this protects you against any claims your learners may make.
  • Diving Off-Road Drivers aged 14+ - this cover will allow you to teach those who are 14+ off-road or on land you’re using the vehicle on does not form part of the Road Traffic Act 1988, like for example, a disused airfield.
  • Comprehensive Driving Other Cars - If you do need to drive other cars and carry out a demonstration drive in your customer pupil's vehicle you will need this extra cover in case you're involved in a road traffic accident in your customer's car.
  • Modified Vehicle Cover - As a driving instructor, you must inform the insurer of which modifications you have made to your tuition vehicle, such as the installation of dual controls, an additional speedometer or mirrors, sign writing or any disabled driving equipment.

No driving instructor wants to pay over the odds for business car insurance but do keep in mind you don't always want the cheapest policy. To keep the cost down only choose the cover that you need.

What factors affect my driving school insurance premiums?

Depending on what sort of driving instructor you are, your insurance can be a different price. A few key determining factors include:

  • PDI or ADI: If you've passed ADI part 2 and you're working for reward as a PDI in your six (6) month probationary period, your premiums will be higher.
  • Type of car: You can keep your car insurance premium down by choosing a low group car with a smaller engine size.
  • Post Code: If you live in a post code with a high crime rate your premium will increase.

How can I reduce my premiums as a driving instructor

Other ways PDI's and ADI's can reduce their premiums include:

  • Part of Full time:  If you only work part-time, insurers will reduce the price of your cover accordingly.
  • Purchasing a new car:  a high upfront cost, but new modern vehicles are more fuel-efficient and reliable with less maintenance costs.
  • Parked over-night in a garage:  Insurers will take into account parking. Keeping your vehicle garaged over-night as opposed to keeping it on the street will reduce your premium.
  • Immobilizer:  Adding additional security precautions like buying an immobilizer will attract a discount.
  • Increase your excess:  If you increase your excess, you will pay less in monthly premiums. In the event of a claim, however, you will have to contribute more towards the repair.
  • Protect your No Claims Discount (NCD):  Try not to claim unless the damage is serious. Insurance companies will reward careful claim free drivers with lower premiums which can potentially cut the cost of cover by as much as 65%.

How to find cheap car insurance as a driving instructor

The best way to find a cheaper car insurance policy is by comparing different quotes with different brokers and finding a tailored plan that best suits your needs as a driving instructor. Essentially, the more additional cover you have, the more expensive it will be so only accept what you need to keep your driving school business running smoothly.
